Windows Desktop Search 3.01 Released

Microsoft just released Windows Desktop Search 3.01 for Windows XP (KB917013). This is news being that Microsoft just released Windows Desktop Search 3.00.  It’s a “MUST” have for you Office users out there who like me, spend 75% of the day in Microsoft Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007. The update however appears to have several valuable updates. Here’s what I’ve found:

Requirements:
Windows XP SP2
Office 2007

Problems
Although the instructions “SAY” the upgrade process works, it did not for me…..   After the upgrade process I did a reboot and when I came back up, desktop search was broken.  Although all the options were there (including the features which were added back from the older Windows Desktop Search 2.x and Live Desktop Search) such as the feature to add UNC searches, no results were returned. I even tried a re-index with no success.

I was able to get search going again by un-installing the Windows Desktop Search 3.01 doing a reboot then re-installing Windows Desktop Search 3.01.  After I did this AND re-indexed my PC, outlook and PST’s, WDS is once again working.

Very Bad News

The one feature that I “REALLY” wanted is still missing from the Windows Desktop Search 3.01 “upgrade”.  Yup, you know what I’m going to say.  the “Show Conversation” options is still missing. Back to the drawing board for Microsoft.  At least I can index my network shares again.
