Apple released an update for iPad, iPhone and iPods touch (5th gen or higher) that are running iOS 7. The update is iOS version 7.1.2 and while not as glamorous as the upcoming iOS 8 update shown off at WWDC 2014, it does contains a good number of glaring security and bug fixes.

Update to iOS 7.1.2

To make sure you get the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update.

On my iPad mini with Retina display (16 GB version), I wasn’t able to install it at first because it needs 1.5 GB of storage space available. If this happens to you, tap on Usage Settings, and you’ll get a list of all the apps installed on your device and the amount of space they are taking.

Software Update

Of course I found a ton of apps that I never use, and went through and cleaned house. I am sure many of you can relate…you install an app, use it once, then completely forget about it. Games are normally the biggest culprits when it comes to space taken up. Although, notice that certain “essential apps” do take up a good chunk of space. Office for iPad for example and even GarageBand.

Here’s a basic list of features in the update provided by Apple:

– Improves iBeacon connectivity and stability
– Fixes a bug with data transfer for some 3rd party accessories, including bar code scanners
– Corrects an issue with data protection class of Mail attachments
